About the program
PLEASE NOTE: As this program takes place during UNSW's Term 3 exam period, students with final exams for their Term 3 2024 enrolment will not be eligible to apply.
This 21-day study tour will take Australian university students through various regions of Japan, providing opportunities to learn about Japanese culture, society, business & industry, as well as participate in a number of people-to-people exchanges.
Upon returning to Australia, participants will complete the following:
- A 3,000-word report on their impressions of Japan;
- A presentation based on the report to the MEF Trustees and Mitsui staff.
Participants will become automatic members of the MEF alumni association.
Funding
All program-related expenses, including international/domestic transport, accommodation, meals, and travel insurance, will be covered by the MEF (students are responsible for private incidental expenses such as souvenirs).
Program overview
Itinerary of the study tour may include;
- Places of historical significance such as Kyoto, Nara and Hiroshima;
- Visits to various Japanese companies and factories;
- Homestay with a Japanese family;
- Weekend with Japanese university students who will soon commence employment with Mitsui;
- Attending a lecture at a Japanese university with their students;
- Meeting with the Australian Ambassador to Japan;
- Experience of the nature in Japan such as Hakone and Miyajima Island;
- Experience of the Japanese tradition such as hot spring, kimono fitting and tea ceremony; and
- Various tourist destinations in Tokyo including temples, shrines and museums.
It is NOT a recruitment exercise by Mitsui
Eligibility
- A full-time, on-campus undergraduate student in 2nd year or above at the time of application. Honours students are eligible.
- An Australia citizen (not permanent resident).

Participants are required to attend the pre-departure orientation on Monday 18 November 2024, as well as the end of program debrief session in February 2025 (date to be confirmed), which will be held at the Mitsui head office in Melbourne

UNSW students with final exams for their Term 3 2024 enrolment will not be eligible to apply as this program falls in exam period.
In addition to the eligibility criteria, MEF will be seeking candidates who meet the following selection criteria:
- Be outstanding ambassadors for Australia at all times whilst in Japan.
- Be academically capable, but selection is not contingent on high academic achievement.
- Clearly demonstrate a keen interest in learning broadly about Japan, and could most benefit from this MEF experience.
Note: Japanese language skills/study of Japan are not required to be eligible for selection.
