Y7 Summit 2023 – Voicing out for a vibrant world

Published:

Anthony Sunjaya, President of the UNSW Postgraduate Council, was selected to represent Indonesia at the Group of 7 (G7) Youth 7 (Y7) Summit, one of the engagement groups of the G7 Summit in Japan this April. It is the first time Indonesia was officially invited to be a guest at the proceedings as it usually is limited to representatives from the G7 group of nations (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and EU). Indonesia was officially invited as a G7 partner to be guest observers throughout the Summit due to their current ASEAN Chairmanship and 2022 Chairmanship of G20.

The G7 Youth Summit aims to unite young leaders to develop policy recommendations and bring them to the discussion table of G7 leaders. The main agenda items for this year’s Y7 Summit were Digital Transformation and Innovation, Economic Resilience, Climate and Environment, Global Health and Happiness, and Peace and Security.

Anthony is a doctor, originally from Indonesia, and currently a final year UNSW Scientia PhD candidate in Medicine at The George Institute for Global Health. Anthony contributed to the development of policy recommendations in Global Health and Happiness whilst at the Summit.

Anthony’s unique experience and research allowed him to contribute the following aspects of the Global Health and Happiness policy:

  • The inclusion of a Health Lens under the Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) framework to form ESHG and funding wellbeing interventions, especially in mental health,
  • Improving equity and access to care especially for women and minority groups, including through the development and implementation of a 10-year International Women and Girls Health Action Plan to eliminate the gender health gap
  • Increasing investment on non-drug treatments such as social prescribing and for research into anti-microbial resistance therapies.

The final recommendations in the Communiqué were then disseminated to the Japanese Prime Minister, Rector of the United Nations University, Japanese Members of Parliament, Ministers, and diplomats from G7 member states.

The Postgraduate Council provides info, support, representation, and advice on issues that affect PG students at UNSW and the wider PG student population. Check out their page for more information.
