Academic integrity reminder | ChatGPT

You may have read recent news articles on the emergence of sophisticated generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools such as ChatGPT. AI is a fascinating area of study and development (including work done here at our very own university), which has the potential to transform many aspects of our daily lives, including education. You may have already used a range of AI tools during your studies, such as those that check your grammar, assist with reference formatting, or transcribe audio files.

Over the coming months, as a learning community UNSW will continue to have conversations around AI tools such as ChatGPT, and discuss the acceptable uses of this technology in education and beyond.

While we work through these issues as a community, we want to remind you that while the technology changes, our values around academic integrity do not. Your work must be your own and where the use of AI tools like ChatGPT have been permitted by your course convener, they must be properly credited, and your submissions must be substantially your own work. In cases where the use of AI has been prohibited, please respect this and be aware that where unauthorised use is detected, penalties will apply.

Joining a university like UNSW is an opportunity for you to find the limits of your current capabilities and challenge yourself to go further – we are here to support and guide you on that journey.
