All UNSW students are required to provide a verified USI in order to graduate and receive Graduation/Award documentation.
There are only a small number of exemptions to the USI requirement for specific types of International Students.
Check the exemption cases below and follow the steps to confirm if you are eligible to graduate without a USI.
Offshore international student who completed all or part of their studies in Australia and commenced program BEFORE 1 January 2023
If you have commenced your UNSW program before 1 January 2023 and have completed all or part of that UNSW program in Australia, but have since returned to your home country, then please email the Graduations Team ([email protected]) with the following statement:
I, FIRSTNAME LASTNAME STUDENT ID, have completed UNSW program PROGRAM NAME. I started my study onshore in Australia before 1 January 2023 but have returned to my home country to complete my study and am therefore automatically exempt from needing a USI.
Update your mailing address details in myUNSW to your overseas address (mailing address cannot be in Australia).
Offshore international student who completed all or part of their studies in Australia and commenced program AFTER 1 January 2023
If you have commenced your UNSW program after 1 January 2023 and have completed all or part of your UNSW program in Australia, but have since returned to your home country, then you will be required to apply for an official USI exemption letter by following the steps on the USI Registry Exemptions webpage to get an Exemption Letter.
Please email your Exemption Letter PDF to the Graduations Team directly ([email protected]).

Offshore international student who completed all their study outside of Australia
If you have completed your entire UNSW program offshore, then please email the Graduations Team ([email protected]) with the following statement:
I, FIRSTNAME LASTNAME STUDENT ID, have completed UNSW program PROGRAM NAME entirely offshore and have not been in Australia while undertaking any study towards this program and consequently I am not eligible to register for a USI or apply for an official exemption from the USI Registry.
