Term 1 2022 VC's Welcome message

Congratulations and welcome to UNSW Sydney!

I offer you my warmest greetings as you prepare to join us for Term 1.

It is with great excitement that we anticipate the commencement of the 2022 academic year with more students joining us on campus than the pandemic years allowed. I hope that in our blend of on-campus and virtual learning experiences, you will enjoy the distinctive education and quality student experience that are uniquely UNSW.

This has not been an easy time for students, and I commend you on your determination to continue with your study plans. The education, skills, and critical thinking capability you are seeking to acquire over the course of your study will be crucial as you help guide our community through the post-pandemic era.

At UNSW, our approach to problem solving, our unwavering standards of academic rigour and our commitment to being servants of society – local and global – are the foundation of our motto, ‘Scientia corde manu et mente’. Nurturing knowledge by heart, hand and mind reminds us that our goal as a university is to not only satisfy your intellectual curiosity but to guide you to apply it with compassion and in practical ways.

This is the path upon which you now embark, and I encourage you to keep these values central to your education journey, and beyond.

As you return to UNSW or join us for the first time, know that you are part of a community – not just for the duration of your study, but for your lifetime.

As members of that community, we all have a part to play in building a respectful and inclusive culture. To understand the behaviours we expect of you at UNSW, and those you have the right to expect of others, I encourage you to visit the 'Be A Better Human' site.

I also urge you to embrace the opportunities to get to know your university and your classmates, through the Orientation program, faculty welcome events, and all the great information and connections to be made through the Student Life Hub. It is important that you all feel a connection to your university and your fellow students, whether engaging in university life on campus or online.

Term 1 O-Week will take place Monday 7 – Friday 11 February 2022 and is packed with both on-campus and virtual opportunities which you can live-stream from anywhere. We look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible, so please register for your O-Week events.

I hope it is a week to remember.

Best wishes,

Professor Ian Jacobs
President and Vice-Chancellor UNSW Sydney
